Turning Page Farm

Overview

A developing diverse livestock farm and goat dairy focusing on forest farming in Central Maine. As of 2018 we are now also the only brewery in Monson, Maine.

Description

Turning Page Farm was born out of our disillusion with what is generally thought of as success. We longed to design our lives rather than having them dictated by the whims of corporate mission statements that changed with every new Re-org. Our new goal was to have full control of our lives, food and future.  We wanted decisions made and plans enacted to have real impact on our lives. Real results that we could see and feel and touch and taste.

Moosehead Region ATV Riding

Overview

The Moosehead Lake Region offers hundreds of miles of ATV trail maintained by local clubs.

Description

The Moosehead ATV Riders is a local club that offers a well marked trail system up the west side of Moosehead Lake. The system consists of 89 miles of trails including ITS 88, plus a new connector trail from the Burnham Pond Road around the back side of Squaw Mountain to the Brochu Road. The ITS 88 snowmobile trail from Greenville Junction to the East Outlet is available for ATV riding from the time the trails open in May, until December 15 when the trails close for snowmobile traffic only. The Big Moose Pond trailhead has a 5-mile loop, which connects to ITS 88 and offers trailer parking at the Public Lands on the North Road. You can park your trailers and ride from the kiosk on the Dump Road (from Greenville Junction, take Depot Street south, bear right at the fork toward the Greenville Landfill). There is also trailer parking available at the Public Lands on the North Road by Squaw Brook, on the Burnham Pond Road by the I-beams, or at the Public Parking at the East Outlet. At the East Outlet, you can continue north on the Rockwood ATV trail system. These trails will bring you to the Rockwood area and beyond! On the East side of Moosehead Lake, is another ATV club that has been working hard to open more trails for your enjoyment. Trail maps may be found at the Chamber of Commerce website listed. REMEMBER: Respect all landowners and their property. Please stay on the marked trails!

The Moosehead Region is a world-class snowmobiling destination. Being inland and in the mountains ensures that the snowfall is early and plentiful. Five snowmobile clubs and a loyal group of groomers keep hundreds of miles of local trails well marked and in top condition providing you with a smooth ride. The Moosehead Trail offers 160 miles of spectacular and scenic riding, with stops for coffee, lunch, and gas along the way. The local trails join the Maine Interconnecting Trail System for those avid riders who want to explore other parts of Maine, New Hampshire, and even ride into Canada. Towns along the trail system welcome snowmobilers, and provide ample opportunity for lodging, refreshment, and shopping. Arctic Cat, Yamaha, and Ski-Doo dealers and repair shops are located in Greenville. Guide service, equipment rentals, and advice on good rides are available in many local establishments. The best ride of your life may be a thrilling guided off-trail ride that will take you where no tracks have ever been. Trail condition reports are easily accessible, and will help you ascertain the safety of the ice on the many ponds and lakes crossed by the trails. The most reliable conditions are from January to mid March, but this does vary depending on annual snowfall.

Thompson Brook Falls

Overview

A 20-foot high, sixty degree slide falls will make you gasp, as it crashes into the canyon from the left, spanning its whole width and surging against the canyon wall to your right.

Description

Unknown to most AT hikers, a short side hike half a mile before the AT’s crossing of Wilson Stream would reveal the most spectacular waterfall of this entire section, on Thompson Brook. Approaching the falls from downstream, you first encounter two sets of ledge drops with 20+ feet combined total drop. While scenic enough in high water, don’t be fooled. The real prize lies higher upstream. Less than a quarter mile above the lower set of falls, a narrow slot canyon perhaps 40 feet deep begins to present itself upstream. Keep hiking to gain a vantage point of the main falls. And there’s more! Blocked by the canyon, you must backtrack and climb up to the left hand (south) rim of the gorge. After a difficult, trail-less 100 yard climb amid thick beds of moss and massive white pines, you see it: a 50 foot high, impossibly perfect cascade plummeting into a deep gorge and pool that immediately exits into the 20 foot slide falls described above. And immediately above the 50 footer, like the top level of a three-storey cake, is a perfect ten foot falls plunging into its own deep pool. Finally, to finish off the spectacle, a short distance higher up are two pretty falls each five or six feet high, rendered ordinary only by comparison with the stunning display below.

Spencer Pond Camps

Overview

Step back in time into six "off the grid" authentic wilderness lakeside housekeeping cabins – each with its own unique personality.

Description

Hidden deep in the woods (14 miles from our nearest neighbors and the only cabins on Big Spencer Pond!) our surroundings and rustic-cozy cabins offer you a piece of living history amidst scenic beauty. Fish, hike, hunt, canoe, read, nap, bird watch, mountain bike, photograph, stargaze, build a campfire – we would love to share this remote paradise with you. The cabins have no electricity but are fully furnished for comfort -with homemade quilts, games, cozy spots to relax, and warm woodstoves. Cabins have docks, canoes, kayaks, and mountain bikes included at no extra charge so you can enjoy fishing, wildlife watching, and paddling on Spencer Pond. Screened porches on each camp allow you to sit comfortably and watch wildlife, listen to yodeling loons, or enjoy the quiet whispering of the wind through the pines.
